Tuesday December 4th Death at the Wellcome

Before going to the Tate today, I visited the remarkable “Death-a Self-Portrait” at the Wellcome Collection. Check it out here at http://www.wellcomecollection.org/whats-on/exhibitions/death-a-self-portrait.aspx

With my interest in Day of the Dead in Mexico, and relics and reliquaries in medieval Europe, this was very exciting – its all from the collection of one man, Richard Harris. I also finally got to see the “Bronze” Exhibition at the Royal Academy http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/bronze/ This was the last week so it was packed, but an incredibly impressive, huge show, grouped thematically, with many objects borrowed from private collections and not seen in the UK before. There was also an excellent show demonstrating the different and complex techniques for bronze-casting.

This is one of several experimental pieces I’m working on back in the studio, inspired by Boetti and his hometown of industrial Turin. There’s other versions made from discarded CVs and completely useless ceramic objects modelled with the hands.
