Panteon Del Ingles/The English Cemetery

Today I have visited the Cornish Cemetery, the evocative and beautiful mountain top graveyard where the emigrant Cornish miners and their families are buried.

All the graves face towards Cornwall. Many graves have Cornish names-Its a moving and humbling experience and brings home the hope and the despair of leaving Cornwall behind for this so very different world. Much of the graveyard is covered in moss and on a a cold misty and atmospheric day it was very evocative of the far west of Cornwall facing out into the Atlantic.

Over the years many dedicated individuals have looked after the cemetery including ‘Don Chencho’, who was awarded an OBE for looking after the graveyard for 40 years.
